Aphids

Aphids may cause a great nuisance in trees along streets. With their sucking snouts, the aphids suck the plant juices from the tree leaves and excrete sticky honeydew.
This honeydew ends up in patches under the trees, on the street or on cars.
In addition, a sooty mould will grow on the honeydew, colouring the tree leaves black.

A commonly found species is the lime aphid (Eucallipterus tiliae)

Characteristics:
1) The adult female is black and yellow and measures 1.8 to 3.0 mm.
2) The lime aphid larva is greenish yellow in colour with a few black specks on the back.
3) The nymphs are green-yellow with black stripes.

How to combat:
Because of the fact that the aphids suck the plant juices, Treeguard premium may provide an effective means of control. Treeguard premium is absorbed by the plant, as a result of which the flavour of the plant juices will change, repelling the aphids. The suction damage will be reduced and the aphids will ultimately disappear, therefore also reducing the nuisance of honeydew on streets and cars.

Tip:
Start applying Treeguard premium early in the season. It is precisely the preventative effect of Treeguard premium which prevents the aphids from multiplying quickly in the tree. Depending on the number of insects, treatment with Treeguard premium may need to be repeated a number of times.
